Our fun-loving, outdoor-oriented, kindhearted son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, and friend tragically left this life on February 28, 2014. Michael Benjamin Romney, "Mikey" or "Mike" as we all knew him, returned to the welcoming arms of his Heavenly Father, his brother, his grandparents, and others welcoming him to new life in a new place.
Mike was born March 18, 1987, in Tempe, Arizona, the son of Kirk Bowen Romney and Kathy Lynn Rhodes. As a child he loved cars, building toys with Legos or Constructs, playing Ghostbusters and Ninja Turtles, and collecting rocks and crystals. When he got upset he called people "hot dog heads", which seemed to let off steam. He loved sports, especially soccer, baseball, target shooting, tennis and swimming. He also played the violin and sang in the choir. Mike began his early education at Rover Elementary School in Tempe, Arizona and finished his 5th & 6th grade years at Sego Lily Elementary in Lehi, Utah. He then attended Lehi Junior High School and after a move to Pleasant View, Utah, completed his education at Weber High School. Mike loved working on cars and lettered in automotive. Full of fiery red-headed energy, he was known for his charismatic smile, his genuine love and concern for others, and his compassion for animals.
He started cooking when he was two years old, and it became a lifelong passion. He worked at a number of restaurants and took his tools with him whenever he traveled. He won skeet shooting and target shooting awards. He enjoyed rock climbing, hiking, and anything outdoors. He managed The Grill at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, and during winter months worked on the search-and-rescue team. He lived in Heber City, Utah, while working at Deer Valley as a Sous-chef, worked in North Carolina, and had recently returned to Utah. Mike had a passion for music and "spinning". He loved to mix and write his own music and was hoping to make it more of a career. On Mike's return from North Carolina he rescued a pit bull named Daisy, was his devoted friend and companion. Mike made friends wherever he went and left a lasting impression on all those with whom he made contact.
Mike is survived by his father and mother; his brothers and sisters Amanda (Bodi) Anderson, Rachel (Chad) Smith, Timothy Romney, and Hannah Romney; his grandmother, Carol Rhodes; three nephews, Bridger and Bowen Smith and William Anderson; and two nieces, Sophie and Laynie Anderson. He was preceded in death preceded in death by his brother, Steven Romney, grandparents, William and Ruth Romney; grandfather, James L. Rhodes; ; and cousins, Elijah and Kynslyee Lamb.
