In his own words, Arthur Cloyd McElwain was "born a very small child, practically a baby", on January 12, 1931. He was born in Slippery Rock, PA, to Bruce Smith McElwain and Mabel Jane Wilson. He was known as Art throughout his life. He was the youngest of 7 siblings all of whom preceded him in death.

After graduating from high school, he began his service with the U.S. Navy (during the Korean War) in Pittsburgh, PA on January 27, 1949. While serving in the Navy, he received the following training: Class "A" Electronics Technician in Great Lakes, IL and Submarine School in New London, CT. On January 25, 1955, Art was honorably discharged from his service.

Art joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 29, 1961 in Norfolk,VA. Later he met Alice Jane Boyd while they were both attending a branch in New Haven, CT. They were married in Waterford, CT on July 27, 1963. He held various church callings including serving in the Bishopric and as Ward Clerk.

Shortly after their civil marriage, Art and Alice drove across the country to Logan, UT where they were sealed for Time and Eternity in the Logan Utah Temple in August 1963.

Art worked as an Electronic Engineer for RCA. He took early retirement in the 1980's. He began his entrepreneurial career in small engine repair and sales in a small green "shed" located on their property in Voluntown, CT where he and his family lived. A few years later, his business was doing well enough to build a larger shop to better serve his clients. He worked out of that shop until he officially retired and prepared for the next phase of life.

Art and Alice sold their property in Connecticut and moved across the country to Saratoga Springs, UT in 2003. Both he and Alice worked in the baptistry of the Mt. Timpanogos Utah Temple until health conditions made the service too difficult.

In May of 2020, Art moved to Bellaview Assisted Living in Lehi, Utah. He lived there for 4 years until his passing on July 10, 2024.

Art was preceded in death by Alice, his wife of 57 years, as well as his parents and his siblings. He leaves behind 8 children, Anna Carter (Allan), Amy McElwain (Donal Sisk), Allen McElwain (Kym), Aaron McElwain (Shawn McDonald), Amanda Huff, Amber Burke (Daniel), Adam McElwain, Alison Morris (Scott), 17 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 23rd at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, UT.
