Astrid Emilie Piereder (née Meyer), 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, March 19th in Lehi, Utah.

After several years of advanced dementia, she has been reunited with her treasured memories and with her loving husband, Ludwig, who preceded her in death in 1994. Astrid is also preceded in death by her son Michael and her granddaughter Emma. There has been much rejoicing on the other side of the veil.

Astrid was born in Bremen, Germany, October 14th, 1938, to Bernhard Meyer and Emilie Moebius. Mom's early life was rife with challenges; World War 2, her health, and a broken family, enough so that at the tender age of 18, she embarked on the greatest adventure of her life and moved to Canada with no money and no English.

On that long journey (an immigrant ship called the Seven Seas) was a young Ludwig Piereder, returning to Canada after an extended visit to his native Austria to visit friends and family.  He lent her his binoculars to better view the white cliffs of Dover, and a friendship grew which quickly turned to love and soon marriage.  They established their family in Longueuil, part of the greater Montreal metropolitan area in Quebec, Canada, where their family grew to include five children.

During their time there, they encountered missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and soon joined the Church to become an important part of the local Latter-day Saint community.  Astrid's English improved dramatically as she served in every possible capacity within the branch and district, later to become a stake.

Astrid was a dedicated Mother, faithful and diligent in her callings, despite many health challenges. She diligently taught her children the principles of the gospel in family scripture reading, family home evening and by relentless example and sacrifice.

She was an award-winning gardener, loved long walks, but hated camping. She was an excellent cook, and her blueberry cheesecake was legendary. Astrid loved to travel and did so frequently with her husband Ludwig, and continued to do so after his death, visiting Israel and Egypt in the company of her daughters and more recently returning to her native Germany to recall the memories of her youth. She was adventurous and loved amusement parks and could go toe to toe with her grandchildren on roller coasters!

Mom never lost her German accent and at times, pronounced place names with a unique flair.  We have all adopted her pronunciation of Butte, (Butt) Montana.

She was kind, curious, friendly and frank, which endeared her to her many friends, companions and care givers of all ages and backgrounds.

A large part of our conversations over the last few years was gratitude. She didn't think she deserved all the love that was poured on her by family, friends and especially by members of Covington Care facility. They are her Oma now, which means, they are our daughters. So, it is, with these parting thoughts, that we give thanks to Covington (you know who you are) for all you have done for our dear Mother. You made her last year's comfortable and sweet.

Astrid is survived by her children Andrew Piereder (wife, Donna), his 3 children; Daniel (wife, Lindsey), Leia and Michael and Andrew's 5 grandchildren (Ella, Eden, Lila, Miles, and Maeve). Susan Neal (husband, Steven), her 4 children; Avram (partner, Ashley), Jordan (wife, Kellie), Ethan (wife, Daniela) and Savannah  (husband. Zachary) and Susan's 6 grandchildren (Olivia, Cynthia, Freya, Cayden, Everett and Kennett). Angela Coultrup (husband, Perry), her children; Bethany (husband, Elijah), Joshua, Kayleigh and Benjamin and Angela's Grandchild, Rhydian. David Piereder (partner Lisa Cousens), their 2 children; Cedar and Beren. The widow of Michael, Michele and his children; Jinelle, Dayne (wife, Kate), Brandon (wife, Andrea) and Ashely as well as his two grandchildren; Aurora and Serena.

Our grief is tempered by our knowledge that she is so happy right now and that we will all be together once again. We owe this knowledge to her and her desire to seek truth and hold fast to the iron rod. Love you, Mom.

A memorial service will be held at the Wing Mortuary in Lehi on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 10:00 AM MDT.  Viewing begins at 9:00 AM. The Service will be shared via Facebook live. Please follow the Wing Mortuary Facebook page and the live will begin streaming a few minutes before 10:00am.

All flowers will be brought back to Covington Memory care to brighten the lives of the residents and caregivers after the burial. However, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Latter-day Saints Charities.
