Carolyn Durrant Calkins of Lehi, Utah, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, July 29, 2022, at the age of 91 with family members holding her hands. She was born in Provo, Utah on December 10, 1930 and was the second daughter and third child of Clarence Henry Durrant and Evelyn Marguerite Hinckley. After her birth, the family was joined by four more brothers and two sisters. When she was 14, her family moved from West Provo to Meridian, Idaho where they started and farmed the "Big D Ranch." Carolyn met Loren Gene Calkins when she was 16 and he was 24. He was a returning serviceman from World War II who noticed the tall slender girl at church. They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on December 15, 1948.

Loren and Carolyn resided in the Boise area where Loren worked for a fire protection sprinkler company. His work required traveling to various job sites around the west, so for several years they lived in a small trailer home wherever the work took them; from Butte, Montana, to Casper, Wyoming, to Orofino, Idaho. Their first child, Sylvia was born in Boise, Idaho, followed by Clarence and Melinda. They moved to a small brick home in Boise where the children started school. A few years later they moved to a home Loren designed on Florence Drive in Meridian, Idaho. Brian and Edwin were born while they lived there. Loren started his own fire protection company and later was hired by Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company out of Portland, Oregon to open an office in Meridian, Idaho. In winter of 1961, they moved to an old ranch house near the location Carolyn's brothers were farming. Gordon and Mary were born while they lived there. Loren did extensive remodeling and upgrading and taught the boys and Mary how to build or fix anything. Carolyn taught her girls to sew, cook, can foods, and insisted every child have piano lessons. Over the years, Carolyn and Loren took care of foster children, and welcomed many nieces and nephews to come and live with them while working on the nearby Big D Ranch.

As her children went to college, served missions, married, and left the home, she went back to school and completed several classes (always getting As) at Boise State University. She then began working for Beehive Clothing and later became a manager of a center, and then a general manager who traveled around the United States to open new centers and train new managers.

She and Loren moved to Utah in 1995. After Loren died in 1998, she moved to her home in the Cedar Hollow area in Lehi, where she became Grandma and head party planner to an entire neighborhood. In August 2021, Carolyn sold her home and moved to Covington Senior Center in Lehi, where she made many new friends among the staff and residents. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life and served in all the church auxiliaries in leadership and teaching positions. She was a devoted member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers and participated in many activities, and wrote many histories. She served as a Temple Worker, and a Volunteer in the Family History Center at BYU. Her mind was active to the very last day.

She celebrated her 90th birthday during Covid, and received well over 100 greetings in the mail, by phone, email and even a few in person visits from family and friends. Her children are sure her funeral is her sneaky way to have the big celebration she missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Evelyn Durrant; all eight of her siblings, Lorna, John, David, Stephen, Mary Evelyn, Joel, Russell, and Christine; her husband Loren, and two of her sons, Clarence and Gordon, and one angel grandson, Michael. She became the Matriarchal figure of an extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is survived by three sisters-in-law: Ann Durrant (David, deceased), Claudia Durrant (Stephen, deceased), Marie Durrant (Russell , deceased), her children: Sylvia (Gregory) Kent, Lehi, Utah; Melinda (Dan) Obray, Pocatello, Idaho; Brian (Pauline) Calkins, Nampa, Idaho; Edwin (Julie) Calkins, serving as missionaries in Saint John, Brunswick, Canada; and Mary (Barry) Malone, Marion, Indiana; and daughters-in-law: Sue Calkins Eliason, (Clarence Calkins, deceased) and Dixie Calkins, (Gordon Calkins, deceased) and her dear "adopted" daughter Brenda (Toby) Peterson, Lehi, Utah. She has 39 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held in the Cedar Hollow 4th Ward Building, 1020 E 1900 N, Lehi, Utah on Friday, August 5, 2022, at 11:00 am. The viewings will be Thursday, August 4th, from 6-8 pm at Wing Mortuary on Main Street in Lehi; and the next day from 9:30-10:30 am before the funeral. She will be buried in the Terrace Lawn Memorial Garden (near Cloverdale on Fairview Ave.) in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, August 6th, after a graveside service at 1:00 pm. The Friday services will be streamed live "cedarhollow4thward.org" starting at 11:00 am and will also be recorded. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wing Mortuary in Lehi, Utah.

A luncheon following the Friday services will be provided for family and friends by the Cedar Hollow 4th & 5th wards; and Saturday, following the graveside services, at the LDS Church, 3555 S Cole Rd., Boise, Idaho by the Big D Ranch Durrant family. Please come and eat with the family. Like her son Gordon, used to say, "If you are here, you're family." That was how Carolyn lived her life.
