Charles Alan Gilbert

September 6, 1946 – August 9, 2026

Charles “Chuck” Alan Gilbert, 79, passed away at his home in Holladay, Utah on Sunday, August 9th 2026. He was born the third of seven children on September 6th 1946 in Peru, Indiana to Dell Charles and Lovica May Gilbert. He moved as a child with his family to Lehi, UT where he spent his youth and graduated from Lehi High School in 1964.

Eager to begin a life of public service and with his parents' permission, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army at just 17 years old, a week after graduating from high school. Over the course of a distinguished 12 year military career, he traveled the world with assignments in Thailand, Korea, and stateside. It was within the Military Police that Chuck discovered his true calling, finding a deep passion for helping others that inspired him to pursue a lifelong path in law enforcement.

After leaving the military, Chuck joined the Salt Lake City Police Department, where he dedicated 32 years to serving in a wide variety of assignments. Among his favorites were the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit and the Metro Narcotics Unit; however, he loved working pioneer graveyard patrol.

Chuck left a lasting mark on the policing profession, remaining deeply dedicated both to the community and to his fellow officers. A true "cop’s cop," he always looked out for those entrusted in his care.

Chuck also loved a good book, fishing, and going for drives listening to his oldies. He loved to visit with family and friends. He loved watching sports, especially games and events featuring his children and grandchildren.

Chuck is survived by his wife Karen; sister Nora; six children, Patrick (Deann), Sarah, Jason (Rebecca), Chad (Amanda), Amber, and Jared (Mandi); nineteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Martha Sumner, Sarah Christofferson, Julie Ahlstrom, and Laura Luker; older brother Dell “Butch” Gilbert; and a daughter, Mary.

His legacy of service, dedication, and personal sacrifice will never be forgotten by those who love him.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 21st, at 11:00 AM at the LDS chapel located at 2080 E. Donelson Lane in Holladay, with a viewing held prior to the services from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A graveside service will follow at the Lehi Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Chuck’s memory to the Salt Lake City Police Foundation.
