Don Maxwell Yates, 89, peacefully passed away after a brief struggle with cancer on April 17, 2025, surrounded by family in the warmth of the home that he built in Lehi.

Don is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife, Janae Chidester, of 69 years, as well as his children: Alden, Doreen Barker (and Paul), Tyler, Todd (and Kim), Stacey Redford (and Jim), Travis (and Amanda), and Derek (and Sarah), plus 27 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren, all of who genuinely loved his company and are saddened by his passing.

He was born in Tooele on March 19, 1936 to Zina and Hyrum Yates. Don was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Theron, Marvin, Norman, LaVon, Duane, and Belva.

He was sealed to his sweetheart, Janae, in the Salt Lake City Temple on April 5, 1956. He was a profoundly spiritual man, serving in many callings such as Bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as an Ordinance Worker for the Timpanogos and Saratoga Springs Temples.

Hod, as he was affectionately known, excelled as an Instrument Repairman at Geneva Steel before starting his own business installing fences and gates. His accomplishments can be seen throughout the community.

He served in the National Guard, and in his spare time, Don was passionate about restoring vintage cars, gardening, hunting, and camping with his extended families, especially in the hills surrounding Vernon and the mountains surrounding Moon Lake. Always full of stories, he loved interacting with people and was such an inspiration to all who knew him.

He was a tremendous friend to everyone. Honest, compassionate, and generous, he made
a lasting impression on countless individuals who will miss his presence for years to
come.

Viewings will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 from 6-8 pm and from 10-11am on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the Lehi Central Stake Center. A funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00 am at the same location. Interment will be held at the Lehi City Cemetery after the funeral service.
