George Brian Bone of Springville, Utah passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the age of 84. After several years of declining health, Brian died peacefully with his beloved wife, Maralyn and members of their family by his side.

Brian was born in Lehi, Utah on April 29, 1938, the first child of George and Arva Bone. His childhood was happy surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. He often recounted memories of rotating in and out of their homes and enjoying the simple pleasures of rural life. Both of his parents were educators and Brian developed a love of learning that he shared with his children and grandchildren throughout his life.

Brian graduated from Lehi High School in 1956 and entered Brigham Young University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics in 1960 followed by a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics in August of 1963. Following his graduation, Brian accepted a teaching position in the Math and Computer Sciences department at BYU. Throughout these years, Brian also served as a Reserve Commissioned Officer Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. During this endeavor, he was presented with the Sabre Award as the outstanding cadet in his class upon completion of his training at Fort Ord, California in the Engineers Battalion.

During the summer of 1959, Dad spotted 'the most beautiful girl' he'd ever seen, Maralyn Thorne, while working as a shift manager at the Pleasant Grove Cannery. At that moment and for the rest of his life, Maralyn was the apple of his eye. The two were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 8, 1961. Brian was tireless and ambitious, and always, he acknowledged Maralyn's unreserved support as they traveled through life together. Her love for him was evident by the way she capably managed their home, making it possible for him to chase his dreams and still spend valuable time with his precious family. They welcomed 5 daughters to their family. Anyone who knew Brian, knew how much pride he took in being 'Dad' to five girls. Brian and Maralyn raised their daughters in Bountiful, Utah where they lived for 50 years. They left many dear friends in 2016 to be closer to some of their daughters in Utah County.

Brian led an impressive 40-year career as a Consulting Systems Engineer with IBM's Salt Lake City Branch. Numerous recognitions from the company attest to Brian's intelligence and work ethic. He was driven and loved the work he did. From the middle of his career on, he was part of a cross-functional team that managed projects from design to implementation for some of the largest, complex and classified projects including an 'interesting' assignment for a Military Customer in Egypt. Brian's love of people of all walks of life was evident during this multi-year assignment.

Brian was an active lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed serving in various capacities including service as a counselor in an LDS Stake Presidency and Bishopric. In 1986 he was awarded the Silver Beaver, recognizing his immense service to the Boy Scouts of America associated with his service with the Young Men in the LDS church.

In all aspects of life, Brian possessed leadership qualities. Combined with his humble demeanor and genuine interest in and love for people, Brian took on community initiatives. During the SLC bid for the 2002 Olympics, Brian donated his time and leadership as Chairman of the Utah Figure Skating Club. He was active in the Exchange Club and other community organizations. Dad loved music and made sure to pass that on to his girls who all studied the piano, filling the bustling home with sounds of scales and arpeggios. Brian was also an accomplished musician, playing the trombone in his youth, a talent he resurrected when his family was launched--we were all thankful we played the piano when Dad started practicing the Trombone again, but he was undeterred!

Brian is survived by his cherished eternal companion and tireless caregiver, Maralyn, siblings, John (JoAnn) Bone and Margaret (Gordon) Nebeker and his five daughters, Michelle (Kevin) Sutterfield, Stephanie Thomas, Liesl (Duane) Bernards, Maralee (Robert) Muhlestein, Erin (Stephen) Bretzing and 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

We will remember our fiercely loyal, gentle, hardworking husband and father for the things he loved most: time with his sweetheart, Maralyn, his 5 daughters and their families, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, a well-seasoned steak, a Sunday drive, tinkering with anything mechanical, holiday meals (feasts!) and visiting with loved ones.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Wing Mortuary, 118 E Main St, Lehi, UT 84043. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the Lehi City Cemetery with Military Honors will follow.
