James Ellis Campbell, Jr. passed away at age 79 at his home in Lehi on Friday, November 20, 2020.

Jim, as he was known by most, was born April 10, 1941 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He was raised in Jacksonville Beach by his parents James Ellis and Bertha Bracey Campbell.

Jim graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher Sr. High School in Neptune Beach, Florida in 1959, and that same year began attending Brigham Young University. After a year of school, he took a hiatus to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western Canada Mission. After an honorable release, he returned to BYU to resume his education.

While attending the university, Jim joined the Utah Army National Guard in 1962 as a member of the 19 ^th Special Forces Group. He completed basic training and moved on to airborne training. After an injury sustained at jump school, he cross trained as a medic and an intelligence sergeant. He transferred to the US Army Reserves in Oregon and Idaho, where he served until an honorable discharge in 1969.

In 1963, while attending school, working, and serving in the National Guard, Jim met Eva Engberson of Monteview, Idaho. They were married on June 19, 1964 and sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The young couple began a family which would eventually include five children: Todd, Brian, Debbie, Kim, and Trevor.

After graduation from BYU in 1966, Jim and Eva returned briefly to Jacksonville Beach, and Jim began a career in the insurance industry that would take him and his family from coast to coast, with the majority of that career spent close to family either in Jacksonville Beach; American Fork, Utah; or Boise, Idaho. Jim loved the law and particularly enjoyed working through the legal aspects of insurance.

While he enjoyed his career, Jim's highest priority was always his family. He always found time to participate in his children's lives, spending many years coaching his children in youth sports or helping with Scouts, school, or other projects.

Jim's priorities and commitments were grounded in his love of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Despite the time demands of a family and career, he always made time to serve others, particularly through his Church service. He found the same joy and energy serving as a teacher of youth as he did as a Bishop in his ward or a member of a Stake Presidency.

In 2011, after 47 years of marriage, his wife Eva passed away. A year later, on November 17, 2012, Jim married Judith Sue Rafkind in the Oquirrh Mountain temple. With that marriage to Judie, he gained a new family that loved and appreciated him very much, and Jim reciprocated that love.

Both Jim and Judie had previously served missions, and both were committed to serving again. In 2013 they began their service together in the Philippines, Cauayan mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After returning from their mission to the Philippines, Jim and Judie moved around within the state of Utah, always with two requirements for their home: that they be close to family members, and that they have a temple in which to serve. They served together as temple workers in both the St. George and Mt. Timpanogos temples.

Jim leaves a legacy of love and service: service to his fellow man, to his Church, and to his Heavenly Father. Judie demonstrated that same commitment, serving by Jim's side through his final moments on this earth.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Brian Alma Campbell and his first wife, Eva Mae Engberson Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Judith Sue Rafkind Campbell of Lehi, Utah; his son, James Todd Campbell of Provo, Utah and his spouse Alison; his daughter, Debra Lynn Campbell Jones of Blackfoot, Idaho and her spouse Kenneth; his daughter, Kimberly Campbell McBride of St. George, Utah and her spouse Mitchell; his son, Trevor Ellis Campbell of Los Angeles, California; as well as eight stepsons and stepdaughters, and their spouses. Jim is also survived by 35 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Jim will be laid to rest at the West Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Terreton, Idaho on Saturday, November 28, 2020.
