Joan Marie Jonsson Russon beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away at the age of 78 in the American Fork Hospital on Monday, November 22, 2021 after a lengthy and valiant battle with cancer.
Joan was born February 13, 1943 in the American Fork Hospital to Lawrence Thomas and Alice Marie Degelbeck Jonsson, She grew up on a farm in Highland, Utah, graduating from American Fork High School, one of the valedictorians of her graduating class, with many academic achievements, including being editor of the school newspaper. She earned full tuition scholarships to several universities.
Joan married LaVell Dwayne Russon September 20, 1962 in the Manti LDS Temple (59 years). Their family was blessed with five sons, Steven, Loren, Larry, Ronald, and Jeremy. Joan also collected a handful of "adopted sons" who have remained close through the years.
She is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions where her talents abilities, example, and spirit provided a positive influence for many. She especially enjoyed her opportunities for service in the primary organization. Serving several times as primary president. Joan had a gift for connecting with children, and took great interest in teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to little ones. Joan and her husband LaVell served a mission assignment in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Employment Resource Center.
She has been able to use her creative skills and abilities in a number of career situations including the banking industry as a branch manager and as an escrow officer and vice president of a title company. She was also a notary public. Joan was also an accomplished seamstress, and made numerous wedding gowns, blessing dresses, quilts, band uniforms, road show costumes, and queen contest gowns. She was also an amazing cook, and had a knack for showing her love for others through baking, be it homemade bread, German chocolate cake, or her famous cub scout bribery cookies. Joan also had a knack for gardening fresh produce and preserving wonderful jams, salsas, fruits, and vegetables. Joan also had a soft spot in her heart for animals, and was a nurse to innumerable puppies, kitties, chickens, and other critters.
Joan made her home a wonderful and pleasant place to be in because of her beautiful and caring personality. She will be greatly missed and her influence and spirit will continue to be felt by those who were blessed to know her.
Joan in survived by her husband LaVell and four sons, Steven, Loren, Larry and Ronald, sixteen grandchildren, and four great grand children. Two brothers, Jon Jonsson and Tom Jonsson, and one sister, Kathy Jonsson Baum. She was preceded in death by her parents and one of her sons, Jeremy.
Funeral services for Joan Russon will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lehi East Stake Center at 851 North 1200 East, in Lehi, Utah. A viewing prior to the service will begin at 10:00 a.m. A viewing will also be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Wing Mortuary at 118 East Main Street, Lehi, Utah. Interment will be at the Lehi City Cemetery following the services.
The Russon family will gather for a luncheon following the interment. The luncheon will be in the Lehi East Bench church building at 1631 East 900 North.
The service will be live streamed on the Wing Mortuary Facebook page. When the service starts, her name will appear on our page.
