John Curtis Fortie was born on September 17, 1958 and passed away suddenly on September 16, 2021. His family and friends are devastated by this sudden loss and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Curt is married to Mary Kay Fortie and they were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 22, 1982. He has two step-sons, Brent and Craig Lloyd, along with eight grandchildren.

Curt worked for the United States Army on Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah beginning in 1983 facilitating their recreation programs. After time at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska and Wiesbaden Air Force Base in Germany, he returned to his career in Dugway and built a wonderful recreation experience for the residents as well as a robust tour and travel program. Because of his work with the military, he and Mary Kay were able to travel all over the world. He was loved and adored by the civilian and military personnel in every role he had.

Curt was an avid scouter, serving in several leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America. He was known for sharing his years of experience and expertise in the outdoors with other leaders and any young man who went through his program. Curt also served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, most of which were focused on the youth.

Curt loved his family; especially his grandkids. He was known to be the ring-leader for a quick kickball game or building forts in the house or backyard at any moment. Spending time with his family and friends was his first passion. He also loved adventuring in the mountains, canyoneering, repelling and hiking with his wife and friends. Curt developed an annual trail running race in Dugway, Utah, of which he was especially proud.

Everyone who speaks with Curt feels like the sun is shining directly on them. He had a special way to help people feel welcome and loved and he was genuinely interested in making special relationships. Kids of all ages flocked to Curt. He had a magical way of connecting with young people and making them feel important. He was known to play with kids for hours, even those he had just met. During family dinners and gatherings he could often be found reading stories or playing board games with the kids.

Our family has a huge hole in it. We are so appreciative of the thoughts, prayers, flowers and kind words that so many have shown. We love you all.

He is survived by his two step-sons Brent and Craig Lloyd as well has his father John, brother Ken (Tami) and sisters Linda (Mike Mounteer) and Cheryl (Alan Rauckhorst). Curt was so kind and could always be seen helping others or serving in some capacity.

A public viewing will be held Thursday, September 23, 2021 at Wing Mortuary 118 East Main, Lehi, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 1:00 PM in the The LDS Chapel located at 2161 West Grays Drive, Lehi, Utah.
