Our loving mother and grandmother Joyce Annette Carlson Phippen, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 24, 2022, holding the hand of her husband McKay Phippen.
Joyce was born on April 30, 1933, to Nils Algot Carlson and Florence Caroline Bates Carlson. She married McKay Cook Phippen on June 13, 1951, eight days after her graduation from South High School. They were married for 71 years.
Her greatest joy was her family. She was a loyal partner and a caring and attentive mother. Joyce was proud of her Swedish heritage and always spoke fondly of her father, who immigrated from Sweden. She exemplified quiet patience and her sweet, calm and constant smile seemed to say I'm so glad to see you.
She had a passion for reading and books. In High School, she worked at the Salt Lake County Library. After her children were grown, she became a librarian once again for Crestview Elementary, where her favorite part was reading stories to the children. She was a stickler for proper grammar and would correct you until you said it right. She had a beautiful singing voice and was blessed with perfect pitch, loved watching old musicals, and relished her time at Bear Lake with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Nils Carlson, her sister Beth Dunn, her son Lance Phippen, two granddaughters Tasha Price and Nicole Price, and three great-grandchildren Saydria Reeves, Rafe Schulthies, and Emmitt Hiatt.
She is survived by her husband McKay Phippen, her brother Jim Carlson (Pam), children Paula (Walt) Price, Steve Phippen, Annette (Rich) Nichol, Reggie (Cheryl) Phippen, Trent (Holly) Phippen, Wade (Anji) Phippen, 30 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, one still a hatchling and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
