Joyce Mickelsen Tolley passed through the veil to the rest and peace of the Gospel and the Lord Jesus Christ on February 13, 2023 under the care of hospice surrounded by family. Her death was incident to Stage 4 Cancer.
Joyce was born February 7, 1953 to Alva McKay Mickelsen and Hazel Chapin Mickelsen in Pioche, Lincoln County, Nevada. She was the fifth of six children. The family subsequently moved to Panguitch and Salina in southern Utah before her teen years which made her the sunshine California bare-foot girl from Holtville, California.
On Senior Ditch Day, a toboggan accident shattered her left tibia and fibula. She was told that she would never walk again. Her resolve, along
with that of her father and others, had her ambulatory at Snow College and then at the Extension of the BYU Nursing Program in the avenues of Salt Lake City. Her dedication to walking is something of an institution in the neighborhood she has called home.
Joyce completed her Associate of Science from Brigham Young University. She held licenses as a Registered Nurse in Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, and Arizona. She served patients in hospice, home health, extended care, gastroenterology, orthopedics, labor and delivery.
Joyce married Ronald Tolley on June 12, 1975 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. The family has lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, West Lafayette, Indiana, Loveland, Colorado, Boise, Idaho, Tempe, Arizona, Brussels, Belgium, and Lehi, Utah. Children have come, grown, and gone from the home; family and friends have come and forever lingered in our hearts.
Soeur Tolley along with her husband companion served in the Belgium Brussels / Netherlands Mission from May 2006 to October 2007. Much of her time was spent with the young sister missionaries sharing her simple testimony in French of a particular point of doctrine. She interacted
intensely with Young Adults from across the area and with members of the Louise Ward where as many as seven languages were used.
Later as Family History volunteers, Joyce and her husband served a more exclusive and captive audience, assisting inmates of the Women's Timpanogos facility at the Utah State Penitentiary to index family history records, allowing them to complete community service.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ann Richards ( Kay ) of Salt Lake City, and Mary Hall ( Brent ) of Provo, Utah.
She is survived at the time of her death by her husband, her children Ron Mikkel "Mike" of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Chalice Leaman ( Robert ) of Rockville, Maryland; John Eric ( Nicole Colombani ) of Kemmerer and Afton, Wyoming; Trish Melander ( Nick ) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Kent ( Margret Avis ) also of Salt Lake City, Utah. Joyce is also survived by six grandchildren: Ethan Alexander Leaman, Hannah Jo Leaman, Jacob Robert Leaman, Alex Tolley, Lilliana Mae Tolley, Bradon Alexander Tolley; her sister Marlene Goodrich of Orem, Utah; and brothers Chris ( Jan ) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Mark ( Robin ) of Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Burial is at the Lehi City Cemetery, 1100 North 400 East.
