Marilyn Johnson Newton     January 2, 1933 – June 15, 2026

Marilyn Johnson Newton, a woman of deep faith, quiet strength, and enduring grace, passed away on June 15, 2026. She was 93 years old. Born on January 2, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Emil Hilbert "Jack" Johnson and Martha Lenora Jensen Johnson.  Marilyn lived a life of remarkable purpose, spanning careers in public service, national security, and devoted membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Marilyn began her schooling in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and later graduated from Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah. She went on to attend Brigham Young University for two years, where her faith and character were further shaped. As a young woman, she answered the call to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving the people of Norway — an experience that left an indelible mark on her heart and soul.

Marilyn's professional life was one of distinguished service. She served as a secretary to United States Senator Wallace Bennett of Utah in Washington, D.C. for two years, contributing to the work of the nation's capital. She subsequently built a 23-year career as an administrator at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, one of America's preeminent national security research institutions, retiring at the age of 63.

Throughout her life, Marilyn called many places home — Salt Lake City, Utah; Rock Springs, Wyoming; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Oakland, California; Los Angeles, California; Livermore, California; Tracy, California; Cardston, Alberta, Canada; and Lehi, Utah — each chapter enriching the tapestry of a life well lived.

Marilyn remained single throughout her life until, at the age of 82, she found the love of her life. She and Donald Newton were sealed in marriage in 2015 at the Oakland California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — a joyful union that stood as a testament to the truth that love has no season. Donald preceded her in death, and Marilyn carried his memory with her until the end.

In her personal life, Marilyn found great joy in quilting and machine embroidery, crafting beauty with her hands as she had crafted meaning throughout her years. She was a devoted and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose faith guided every aspect of her life.  She served as a temple ordinance worker in the Oakland Temple for 16 years.

Marilyn is survived by her brother, Bob Walter Johnson and wife Carole of Cedar City, Utah; sister-in-law Jeanne Johnson of Burke, Virginia; and her beloved stepchildren, Doneen DeMeester (Wayne), Lori Salmon (Bruce), Cheryl Harker (Michael).  Marilyn has 23 step-grandchildren, 75 step-great grandchildren, and 1 step-great-great grandchild.  Her cherished nieces and nephews are Doug, Debbie, and Jeremy (Bob's), and Eric, Jeff, and Jinger (Bert's)). She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Newton, her brother Bert Emil Johnson, her sister-in-law Claudia Johnson (Bob), her stepson L. Scott Newton (Sheryl) and stepdaughter Nancy Jean Newton Wilcox (Darren) and nephew David (Bob's).

Marilyn Johnson Newton lived with quiet conviction and generous love. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Funeral services will be held at Wing Mortuary, Lehi, UT, on Saturday, June 20.  Viewing is from 10:00 to 10:45, and the funeral at 11:00.  It will be available for viewing on Wing Mortuary Facebook page.  She will be interred at the Cardston Cemetery, Cardston, Alberta, Canada, with her husband.
