Obituary

Dr. Mary Kathryn Clarke, a dedicated medical professional and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on October 12, 2025, in Lehi, Utah. She was 72 years old.

Mary was born on August 28, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, to James Spencer Clarke of La Grange, Illinois, and Maxine Yvonne Taylor of Little Falls, Minnesota. Mary enjoyed childhood with her older sister, Nancy Clarke, in Chicago, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles.

Mary's life was marked by a commitment to science, education, and service. Her academic journey began at Stanford University where she earned both a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in English. Driven by a passion for medicine and discovery, she went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas.

Mary completed an Internal Medicine internship, Pathology residency, and fellowships in Forensic and Surgical Pathology. She was also Chief Resident at UCLA/Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her career included roles at Albuquerque Health Partners, CompHealth (serving various hospitals), City of Hope, and Clinical Immuno Diagnostics Lab Service.

Mary's professional life was matched by her personal passions. She had an abiding love for animals and found joy visiting the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The ocean held a special place in her heart—so much so that as a child she dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. Mary was a nature enthusiast who enjoyed exploring the outdoors as a member of the Sierra Club. It was during one such hike that she met Bruce Hauswirth—a cherished partner and friend who preceded her in death.

Above all else, Mary found her greatest joy in her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Carolyn Stevenson and husband Bryce; her son James Wigginton and wife Heather; her treasured grandchildren: Lacey, Spencer, and Blake Stevenson; Talmage, Everett, Quinn, and Cora Wigginton; and her sister, Nancy.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff and caregivers at Covington Senior Living, Aspen Senior Care, and Renew Home Health & Hospice, and Scott & Laura Wigginton for their compassionate care in Mary's final days.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. A Memorial Gathering will be held on November 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 4125 San Juan Avenue, Fair Oaks, CA.
