Norma Jean
Gammon Huggard
Nov 3, 1932 — Jul 13, 2020
Norma Jean (Gammon) Huggard, 87, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2020, holding the hands of her children. We miss her from the deepest depths of our hearts but have joy in her passing to a place where she is rejoicing in the reunion with her eternal companion and her two children who preceded her in death. Norma Jean was born November 3, 1932, the third child of nine (7 sisters and 1 brother), to Harold LeRoy and Edna Fern (Reynolds) Gammon. Her childhood days were spent on farms in Vineyard and Lehi, Utah where she learned from goodly parents.
Mom met her sweetheart and the love of her life, Glen James (Jim) Huggard on a blind date. They were married on the July 24th holiday, and spent their lives together until Dad's passing in December 2006. They were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on July 24, 1989. Through a lifetime of marriage and raising their family, they worked alongside each other as loving companions. They shared countless memories.
Mom enjoyed a lifetime of service, blessing countless lives through her Christ-like example. She showed us how to serve and to be served. She especially enjoyed her service as a Young Women leader where she made lasting relationships with the girls she served. Mom and Dad served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Hancock, Mission. She pointed us to our Savior in word and deed. Her example will continue to point us heavenward.
After her family was raised, she went to work at Olan Mills Photography and later at ZCMI (Macy's) helping customers with interior design. The job she loved the most was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Mom had numerous trials, tribulations and adversity throughout her life including the miraculous survival of a near death car accident. Throughout it all, Mom remained steadfast and true in her example of strength, dedication and unwavering faith.
Mom left a matchless legacy for her children, their spouses and their 83 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. She taught countless lessons of life while showing how to love, take care of one another, and how to have fun. Her grandchildren will always remember "Special Turns" at Grandmas where lasting bonds with Grandma and cousins were cemented forever.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her eternal companion, one brother; Harold "Bud" Gammon, two sons; Harold (infant), and Roy Lee. Mom is survived by her children, the late Roy Lee's wife Ellen, Irene Palmer, Jim (SheRie), and Jeffry (Leanne), grandchildren; seven sisters; Fern Nielsen (Al, deceased), Bud's wife Ann Gammon, Dortha McStay (Bob, deceased), Etana Larsen (Dean), Roena Gammon, Ina Tucker (Ted, deceased), Linda Peck (Wayne), Mary Wimmer (Sheldon), and dozens of adoring nieces and nephews.
Because of the current health crisis, a private viewing for immediate family members will be held. Funeral services will be under the direction of Wing Mortuary outdoors at 11 AM on Friday, July 17, 2020 in the American Fork Amphitheater, 849 E 700 N, American Fork, UT. COVID 19 protocols for social distancing and wearing of masks are requested. Interment will be at the American Fork Cemetery immediately following the funeral. A live stream of the funeral will begin at 11:00 am on the Wing Mortuary Facebook page.
Our Mom
By Jim Huggard July 2020 written by her bedside as she neared the end of life.
Born of goodly parents, for her a source of pride
To be a credit to them in life, in this she always tried
To be the kind of person, she was taught to be
Passed it on to her children and made sure that we could see
Grateful for a Pioneer heritage, it helped to make her strong
For her many hardships, it helped her carry on
She nearly died from illness, in a ditch she nearly drowned
She fell off of old Button's and hit hard on the ground
She bore up five children, and brought them to this World
She had quite an eventful life for just an 'ole farm girl
In her car once she caused a "head on" the worst kind of a wreck
Busted up her entire body and severely broke her neck
Mama endured the unthinkable, and lost a baby a few hours old
It grieved her for a lifetime, the boy she never got to hold
Her oldest son, Lee was taken from her way to soon
Lee was the "apple of her eye" She thought he "hung the Moon"
Through it all she knew just who she was
She counted on the Savior and His never ending love
She loved His Gospel and practiced what He taught
She served in many "callings" by example showed us what we ought
Of course she had her loving Jim, we just called him Dad
For Mama he gladly gave her all that he ever had
A story book love that will never ever cease
Dad was the one who helped Mom find in life, joy and peace
Mama's story couldn't be told without her loving Jim
Together, he made her whole, perfect, the two of them
He left 'near fourteen years ago to prepare a place above
She profusely mourned his absence, she missed all of his love
Mama was a girly girl, a woman head to toe
She would spend hours on hair and makeup just so she could go
Her attitude about appearance would exasperate most any man
Not her Jim, Dad was her biggest fan
She dabbed a bit of perfume on, each night just before going to bed
And had done so since the day that she was wed
In spite of all this girl stuff, her house was always clean
Even in nooks and crannies, places seldom ever seen
She knew her way around the kitchen and put on quite a feed
Mama served others and tended to their needs
Her and Dad served a mission once in her beloved Nauvoo
So she could share with others what she believed to be true
Mom's heart was very tender and tears would often fall
She was there for others when she ever got the call
A meal delivered, a friend cheered up, she always lent a hand
She lived a life of service for her fellowman
Mama didn't pine for greatness, yet we know that she was great
She found contentment in a simple life, that seemed to be her fate
She didn't want or need a bigger house, she loved just what she had
She made her house a home of love for us and for Dad
Mama loved to see and smell the flowers and marveled at the land
An appreciation for fine art, brush strokes from a master's hand
The World and all its goodness lived within her soul
Refined, tempered, and polished even more as she grew old
Her family, kids and grandkids, was her greatest joy of all
She shined most brightly holding a child big or small
Her posterity made her rich, she knew that she was blessed
If you added up the numbers. She and Dad had passed life's test
Mama was blessed to have seven sisters and a brother she had one
They were a huge part of her life and with them she had fun
A special bond of love I guess the kind only sisters would know
It grieved them all sadly 'cause she was the first to go
If the intricacies of the Universe could be packaged up real small
The beauty and the wonderment, Mom, she had them all
Mama continue on your Eternal journey, those that went before, give 'em a hug
And we'll gaze upon that Celestial sky knowing we are watched over from above!
We Love You Mama!
