Rodney "Rod" Jay Mckinney, age 64, passed away on April 28, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Rod was born May 14, 1961, in American Fork, Utah, to Raymond and Bonnie McKinney. He spent his life rooted in the values of hard work, independence, and a deep love for the outdoors.

Rod graduated from American Fork High School class of 1979. He married the love of his life, Shelley Dean Young, on May 15, 1981. They were later sealed in the Jordan River temple on June 12, 1994. Together they welcomed 4 children which they raised in their home in Lehi, Utah.

Rod worked as a Journeyman Electrician, a trade that reflected his skill, dedication, and strong work ethic. Outside of work, he found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, riding horses, and camping, especially camping adventures with his family. In his younger years he was a member of the American Fork riding club, where he won many trophies, belt bucks and plaques for events such as, team roping, ribbon pull, key hole, barrels and many more. Being outside wasn't just something he enjoyed-it was part of who he was, and he often felt closest to God at the top of a mountain.

At the young age of thirteen Rod lost his Dad in a tragic work accident. Losing his Dad at such a young tender age was very hard on him. However, he found the strength to "cowboy up", and has been working hard to take care of his loved ones ever since.

Rod will be remembered for his love of nature, his devotion to his family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life.

Rod is survived by his children: Melissa (Richard) Maynard, Macie (Jacob) Reimschussel, and Dallon (Jade) McKinney; sisters Shauna (Levi) Bradley and Marianne (Derek) Daniels, ten Grandchildren and two Great-Grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shelley; his son, Ruston "Rusty" Jay McKinney; his parents and many other loved ones.
