Shirley Nell McAlister passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on March 5, 1939, to Vasco and Opal Mullins in Corbin, Kentucky. She was the youngest of two children, having an older brother, Donald Ray Mullins, who passed away shortly after he was born. Shirley attended Coraopolis High School in Pennsylvania, where she began dating her future husband, who lived across the back alley.

On December 22, 1956, Shirley married Jim McAlister in Claysville, Pennsylvania. In 1967, after joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Maryland, they were sealed in the Washington D.C. Temple on June 12, 1975.

Throughout their marriage, Shirley and Jim moved many times, living in Pennsylvania (multiple times), Maryland, Ohio, and Minnesota, before eventually settling in Utah in 1983. Together, they raised three children: Scott (Nadine), Diana (John, deceased), and Rick (Cherilyn). Shirley was immensely proud of her 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, always eager to hear the latest news from each of them.

Shirley enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including reading, painting, gardening, needlepoint, embroidery, crewel, and sewing. She also acted as the general contractor for two different homes that she and Jim built over the years.

She had a deep love for animals, especially her beloved dog Tess, the horses she and Jim owned, and her affectionate cockatiel, Quigley.

Dedicated to her faith, Shirley served in numerous callings in the Church. She consistently sought out opportunities to support and uplift those around her. She also ran a preschool when they lived in Alpine, Utah, volunteered as a Pink Lady at the American Fork Hospital, and worked at The Children's Museum of Utah.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Jim McAlister; her father, Vasco Mullins; her mother, Opal Alberta Mullins; step-father, John Bradford; and her brother, Donald Ray Mullins. She is survived by all three of her children, who will cherish her memory. Shirley was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Cedar Hollow 5th Ward Building, 1020 East 1900 North Lehi, Utah, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held at the church on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM before the service. Interment will follow at the Alpine City Cemetery.
